Flesh-Eating Disease Warning in Florida

Florida health officials are warning beachgoers about a seawater bacterium that can invade cuts and scrapes to cause flesh-eating disease.
Vibrio vulnificus –- a cousin of the bacterium that causes Cholera –- thrives in warm saltwater, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If ingested, it can cause stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea. But it can also infect open wounds and lead to “skin breakdown and ulceration,” according to the CDC.
“Since it is naturally found in warm marine waters, people with open wounds can be exposed to Vibrio vulnificus through direct contact with seawater,” the Florida Department of Health said in a statement.READ MORE

Head Doctor gets Ebola virus

(Reuters) - The head doctor fighting the deadly tropical virus Ebola in Sierra Leone has himself caught the disease, the government said.
The 39-year-old Sheik Umar Khan, hailed as a "national hero" by the health ministry, was leading the fight to control an outbreak that has killed 206 people in the West African country. Ebola kills up to 90 percent of those infected and there is no cure or vaccine.
Across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, more than 600 people have died from the illness, according to the World Health Organisation, placing great strain on the health systems of some of Africa's poorest countries.
Khan, a Sierra Leonean virologist credited with treating more than 100 Ebola victims, has been transferred to a treatment ward run by medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres, according to the statement released late on Tuesday by the president's office.
Health Minister Miatta Kargbo called Khan a national hero and said she would "do anything and everything in my power to ensure he survives".
Khan told Reuters in late June that he was worried about contracting Ebola. "I am afraid for my life, I must say, because I cherish my life," he said in an interview, showing no signs of ill health at the time.

Bacteria discovered that exist on pure energy

Microbiologists based in California have discovered bacteria that survive by eating pure electrons rather than food, bringing an entirely new method of existence to awareness and raising questions about possibilities for alien life.
The ‘electric bacteria’ – as they have been dubbed by the team that discovered them – take energy from rocks and metal by feasting directly on their electrons. The hair-like filaments the bacteria produce carry electrons between the cells and their environment.

The biologists from the University of Southern California (USC) found that the new discovery joins more than ten other different specific type of bacteria that also feed on electricity – although none in quite the same way.READ MORE

Shigella in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A nasty intestinal disease is spreading like wildfire in Kalamazoo County. It's called Shigella. It causes severe bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps and fever. So far there are 46 confirmed or probable cases in Kalamazoo County, and health officials expect the numbers to climb. Health officials tell us Shigella is hitting the elderly and children the hardest.
In a typical summer season, doctors see less than eight cases. But this year, more than five times the cases have popped up in West Michigan. So far, the health department has not been able to figure out where it’s coming from. It's spread through contact with a sick person's fecal matter, which is ingested through the mouth. The bacteria can last about four days outside of the human body, on items such as toilet handles, toys or door knobs. READ MORE

Plague in Colorado

DENVER — A Colorado resident is being treated for the pneumonic plague, the first confirmed case in the state since 2004.
The state health department said Wednesday that tests confirmed the plague in the unidentified patient as well as the family dog, who recently died unexpectedly. The plague is spread by fleas from rodents, especially prairie dogs, and officials say they may have contracted it in eastern Adams County.
The department isn’t saying whether the patient is a man or woman but confirms the person has been hospitalized. Officials are looking for people who may have had contact with the patient so they can be treated with antibiotics.
Pneumonic plague is caused by the same bacteria as bubonic plague but it attacks the lungs and can sometimes be deadly even when treated. READ MORE

Scabies at US Border

A Border Patrol union claims that illegal immigrant minors are coming into the U.S. with "active scabies and other illnesses," claiming one of its agents already has contracted the mite-borne skin
infection and warning it could spread into surrounding communities if precautions are not taken.
The union's warning comes amid claims of tuberculosis at one camp in San Antonio and Texas Gov. Rick Perry's testimony last week of a confirmed case of H1N1, or swine flu.
The medical issues pertain to illegal immigrant minors crossing the U.S.-Mexico border and being detained in Texas and other states. The most detailed information so far has come out of the San Diego Local 1613 chapter of the National Border Patrol Council. READ MORE

Silver Kills MRSA

Hey Mike..another "silver miracle" I suppose one could say. My friend had his face of all places. He went to the ER because the infection was spreading up his jaw and streaks of red were going towards his heart. Anyway, he didn't have money for the antibiotics they wanted him to use, so of course I gave him 48 ounces of silver and told him 1 oz 3 times a day until it's gone. His face is completely healed, both inside and outside is mouth. Didn't take ONE SINGLE OVER THE COUNTER ANTIBIOTIC and he's completely healed from silver alone. He has the MRSA paperwork from the hospital showing he has MRSA. Thanks for Sharing J.
